28th May 1860

Mary Brewster did not make any journal entries between May 27-31, 1849. During the month of June she was more diligent, making entries June 1-3; 5-8; 15, 17; 21-27; 29-30.

Mary Lawrence, [Mon.] May 28 [1860]: “Saw two schooners in the morning. Sent a boat on board one, hoping it might be a Yankee and we might get some late papers; but it proved to be the Elizabeth, of New Brunswick, bound to Barbados with a cargo of lumber. The captain said in reply to the question ‘Have you any late papers?’ that they had neither a book nor a paper of any kind on board except one or two Bibles. The other schooner was several miles off. Made 170 miles in forty-eight hours.”
