March 15, 1860

Mary Brewster did not make any journal entries between March 7-15, 1849; most likely because of her extended stay on land while at Guam.

Mary Lawrence, [Thurs.] MARCH 15 [1860]: “Pleasant weather with the wind nearly ahead. Found by observations[using a sextant] that we made 240 miles the last forty-eight hours. Jip the dog was taken to vomiting this afternoon. Minnie administered a remedy in the form of two peppermint lozenges, which she believes had the desired effect.”

ABOVE: A very cute (and perhaps similar to Minnie’s pup, Jip) “sea dog” enjoys his or her own canvas hammock aboard a sailing vessel.
