7th April 1865

Mary Brewster’s journal for her voyage from 1845 – 1848 ended on March 8, 1848 when the Tiger arrived home (Stonington, CT). Mary and her husband, Samuel did not return to sea for their last voyage until June 1848. However, Mary’s journal-writing did not resume until July 13, 1848.

Mary Lawrence’s journal will resume May 1, 1859.

Eliza Williams made sporadic journal entries from Feb. 27 – May 7, 1861.

However, aboard the Gazelle during 1865, the fourth mate’s personal journal continues (from yesterday’s blog post]: “….Cooper has finished the 11th tub for the woman of the house [ship-board]. Capt. talks about settling down on a farm out west….Mrs. Wroth mourns the loss of a Shanghai hen today. For my part I am glad of it. The Capt. wishes to go in port and start direct for home. But she says she must have her letters first. So we will be kept back three weeks on her acct….Looking into the after cabin I saw in a cradle two dolls and beside them sat a pretend mother singing and talking to them as a little girl would. It is useless to write any more about that but I formed my opinion.”
