April 2, 1859

Mary Brewster’s journal for her voyage from 1845 – 1848 ended on March 8, 1848 when the Tiger arrived home (Stonington, CT). Mary and her husband, Samuel did not return to sea for their last voyage until June 1848. However, Mary’s journal-writing did not resume until July 13, 1848. (Mary Brewster is pictured below).

Between March 30 – April 21, 1859, Mary Lawrence made six different journal entries but did not date them. So the entries which appear here through April 4, are assumed or estimated based upon future entries she dated and begin May 1, 1859.

Between [MARCH 30-APRIL 21, 1859]: Mary continued her journal entry: “….We left Maui the fifteenth of April and arrived off Honolulu the next morning, where we went ashore and found ‘our room’ vacant at Mr. Damon’s and a place at Mr. Whitney’s table. We took a passenger down, a poor sick man that came from California on account of his health and is now anxious to get back to die. He was probably too far advanced in his disease when he arrived at the Islands for the climate to be of any benefit to him…. (Below: Mary Lawrence and daughter Minnie as an infant).

Mary Lawrence’s entry will be continued tomorrow, April 3.

Eliza Williams made sporadic journal entries from Feb. 27 – May 7, 1861.
