March 31 [1859 and 1861]

Mary Brewster’s journal for her voyage from 1845 – 1848 ended on March 8, 1848 when the Tiger arrived home (Stonington, CT). Mary and her husband, Samuel did not return to sea for their last voyage until June 1848. However, Mary’s journal-writing did not resume until July 13, 1848.

Between March 30 – April 21, 1859, Mary Lawrence made six different journal entries but did not date them. So the entries which appear here through April 4, are assumed or estimated based upon future entries she dated and begin May 1, 1859.

Between [MARCH 30-APRIL 21, 1859] Mary wrote: “….We passed several days with Mr. and Mrs. Brayton. They have an infant son several months old. Mr. and Mrs. Bigelow have left since we were there last Spring, and their place is filled by Captain and Mrs. Bailey, who arrived there last Fall….”

Mary Lawrence’s entry will be continued tomorrow, April 1.

Eliza Williams made sporadic journal entries from Feb. 27 – May 7, 1861. On Sunday, March 31, 1861 she wrote: “I have been on deck to walk. I was looking at a piece of Iron Wood. I hefted it, and it is rightly named, for it is very heavy, and when thrown overboard immediately sinks.”
